    I think you may be right with Echinoderma echinaceum (there are a couple of Leicestershire records on FRDBI), though I find these Echinoderma species difficult to distinguish in the field and not a lot better under the microscope. The other photos look like typical Lepiota cristata – so that’s what they probably are.

    Possible – but I’m not sure why you suggest L. crystallifer without giving the key microscopic detail of crystals on the cystidia? Without microscopy, it could equally be Leucoagaricus serenus or L. sericifer. I don’t think you can tell them apart in the field. Collectively, they are not so rare in basic woodland – and limestone is terrific for lepiotoid fungi. Almost certainly there will be other species in the vicinity.

    Looks like a species of Russula. They typically have a rather papery feel with brittle gills.

    Looks like Gymnopus fusipes. Typically grows in clusters at the base of oak trees, more rarely beech. The base of the stem tapers in a root-like way – hence “fusipes”.

    Not a hedgehog fungus, but probably an immature polypore. I think immature fruit bodies of Meripilus giganteus can look like this.

    At this time of year I would guess it’s Agrocybe pediades. I noticed a couple in the garden a few days ago. Not a Hebeloma anyway (gills and spores too dark).

    Hello. Your fungus does not look like a species of Tulasnella, which typically produce very thin, smooth, violaceous to grey fruitbodies (when they are visible at all). I would suggest it’s just a conifer wood-rotting corticioid species of some kind, in a genus like Hyphodontia, Brevicellicium, Trechispora, or somesuch. It’s not, unfortunately, going to be identifiable without a microscope…

    Hi. The highly stipitate fruitbody certainly points to Ganoderma carnosum. In the UK, this is usually found on yew but can also occur on other conifers. There are a few Scottish records, so you are not too far north for the species. I’m not sure that the spores will tell you anything much, but if you want to look for them, the best place on old non-sporulating fruitbodies is on the cap surface. Just scrape the top.

    This looks like Exidia nigricans and almost certainly is. Willow seems to be a typical host for this species, whereas Exidia glandulosa favours oak and hazel.

    Looks good to me. Those small, warted, amyloid spores are very distinctive. Only known in the UK, I think, from Norbury Park in Surrey and a couple of sites in Kent – so well spotted. It is said to have a preference for conifer litter in calcareous soils. I’d suggest you add it to the FRDBI (online – fairly straightforward) so that the record isn’t lost. Photos can be uploaded too. Now someone tell me we’re both wrong…

    Certainly a species of Clitocybe. Something like C. metachroa or thereabouts.

    The spore photograph is rather muzzy – but seems to show the distinctive spores of Entoloma conferendum, a common grassland species. The odd-looking fruitbody is, however strangely coloured – unless that’s an artefact of the photo. Should have been brown with a silver, markedly striate stipe.

    Disturbed areas – especially with woodchips – attract Leratiomyces ceres, an invasive species that seems to have spread everywhere. Car parks and mulched municipal beds are a particular favourite. Pretty, though.

    And pat he comes… Seems highly improbable to me that a Tulasnella species is responsible for the violet staining. I would suggest it’s caused either by a hyphomycete (over to you, Chris) or a bacterium. Old brackets are hosts for a lot of things.
