Thanks Chris. The soft spine/fins on the caps really confused me too.
Thank you for your comprehensive reply. Given the little bit I know of Fungi, the less I know of Lichens and the absolutely nothing I know of slime moulds… there’s a lifetime to be spent finding out more!
I’m fascinated! I’m used to seeing Turkey Tail all green and black and multi-coloured! These were all creamy looking.
It’s a place I visit fairly often.
Next time I’ll take a photo from above!
Thanks.
Thanks. That last bit of info really was a killer 😉 Thank you! That photo was as close as I got. I looked closer with my loupe and marvelled, but I wasn’t that sure what to be looking for
😉 . But your ID pointer is a real help.Yes… I’ll be back 😆 Hello again. A couple of photos of the Menhir lichens. Not sure that there is enough detail for you to work with but thought you might like to see nonetheless

Just a quick update to say I found the site and some of the photos of the Roccella you mention were actually taken at Plouescat – where I found my lichen! So… confirmation perhaps 😀 Hello. No I don’t know the site you mention?
I have a couple more photos of the Standing stone with lichens attached. No idea if they are the same of ifcthere is enough detail to see. I will post tomorrow.
Thank you for your reply. I am fascinated and also a bit lost with such diversity and beauty… and not quite knowing how to proceed
😉 !Thank you for taking the time to give me such a detailed response. Yes, I should’ve indicated in my query, I’m in Brittany, France about 20 miles inland. It’s often pretty wet
😉 especially at the moment.I posted a query the other day and Mark Powell kindly explained about spot testing with K and Im going to mix a strong solution of caustic soda and give it a go.
So much to learn, but what a fascinating subject!
There will be more from me I’m sure!
Thanks again! I have been photographing various lichens today and will be sitting down tomorrow to try and make sense of my images! I’m pretty sure I’m going to be posting for more of your advice.
Hope you don’t mind
😀 !Excellent. Thanks again. I have caustic soda to hand. Thank you! I am a complete novice, but am also completely fascinated.
I’m glad to know I’m on the right track. Is potassium hydroxide, bleach?
So many lichens here.
Something to really get my teeth into between ‘normal’ fungi and butterflies!
Excellent! Thanks Chris. Intrigued that you say it punches through the bales. I’d presumed there was a tear, however small, in the covering… Thanks very much for that. For such a common fungus this is only the first time in 15 years that I have seen it here in Brittany.
It was a relatively common find for me in the UK.
I will look again at the bark-less ‘live root’ the next time I’m there.
