Thanks – that is another suggestion I have had. Size of largest were about 4cm

I would suggest Collins Complete (not!) Guide to British Mushrooms and Toadstools Sterry and Hughes 2009. Out of print but 2nd hand copies usually available via Amazon etc. Glossy pages with photos and small enough to carry in the field

Scarlet Elfcup Sarcoscypha austriaca first sign of them in this location (Brynna Woods NR) this season. On probably Salix in very damp area. Microscope work on specimens from here in recent years all proved to be this species. Only confirmed record in VC41 as far as I know in recent years for Ruby S. coccinea is Coed y Bwl NR. Anyone finding this latter species?

Hopefully I am posting in the correct place and photo will attach :) Typhula fistulosa (syn. Macrotyphula fistulosa var. fistulosa) Pipe Club past it’s best. Same location as November 2016 when it was looking much better. About 14cm tall, in damp scrub woodland with mainly Salix and Malus around

Hi Adam, I remember dial-up :) Me, photos and computers don’t mix well unfortunately :( I looked at your guide to re-sizing photos but it was black magic to me. I will try photo of T.c. from usb microscope which should be small enough file to post.

    Happy New Year!

Thanks Mike. Re-sizing photos for me is too complicated :( Mark

One I come across frequently and with gill ‘collar’ fairly easy to confirm with hand lens :)

Agree with Lancashire Lad. The mycellium will still be present so you may see them again

I’ve never seen the Rusts on Rubus flower buds. As you probably know there are 3 potential Rusts – K.uredinis, Phragmidium violaceum and P.bulbosum which may all be present at this time of the year. I’m not an expert on these but I would suggest it is a microscope job to be sure which.

Oh dear 😥 We have similar problem with 1 of only 2 UK sites for Helvella leucopus (on Kew’s LAFF list). Associated with Populus on Merthyr Mawr NNR and NRW have been taking out the Populus. I’ve been talking to Reserve Manager and he is now aware. I’ve been monitoring site for last 2 years but no sign of the Helvella but I live in hope!

Thanks Andreas, Brian Douglas at Kew has directed us to info.

It looks like S.jurana only occurs on Lime wood (Tilia) but would need checking microscopically to be sure.

    Hello Andreas and Chris,

Ruzenia spermoides – thanks your suggestion Andreas!

Successfully found ‘live’ perithecia and able to extract ‘jelly’. Microscope work by Emma Williams Glamorgan Fungus Group revealed asci with ascospores – hyaline. When stained with Melzer’s showed up nicely. Ascospores allantoid musiform 20.6 -0 21.6 microns by 4.2 – 4.5 which corresponds to paper by R.Hilber and O.Hilber 2002. Moment of confusion when a very few ascospores similar to M.pulvis-pyrius appeared but put down to contamination from insects or other. Sorry no photos but I haven’t been able to resize.

Thanks Chris! Hopefully we will find live ones ‘in the field’ which is my garden! I’ll try and post again in the week.
