Just to check I posted on a Slime Mould yesterday and had a couple of edits to get the two photographs up loaded to the post. It said the post was now going into moderation. It worth a check to see if everything is correct with my post also as it my first post on the updated site also. Apologies in advance if I am seen to be impatient or have simply mucked up the posting.
Just an update to fully close this one out. Brian very kindly assisted by having a look at the sample and his reply back to me was –
” It’s funny how misleading a photo can be. I immediately recognized it when taking it out of the packet (confirmed microscopically) as Phaeographis smithii. So, the second record for this species from Warwickshire”.

Maxine many thanks – the sample was indeed VC38 on the West side – and everything visually seems to fit Lecanographa lyncea perfectly. I had previously tried the usual K & C & UV tests on the Thallus and there was no reactions.
I retried the UV on the Thallus again today but no reaction that I could detect.
I then moved onto Neils K/UV when still wet and again no colour mauve was detected on the Thallus. When drier some orange maybe.
Whether its my technique or not I don’t know although the UV has worked on the few other samples I tested in the past.
Lastly I rechecked the dry Kred and this was still -ve.
For now I have retained the sample until I can move onto using a microscope.

Neil – Many thanks – sorry got a bit carried away by the branching on that one – that explains why there was quite a few patches on each tree and I also need to trust the spot test reaction. Had another go at trying to do closer views of some of the Lobes and after disabling the backlight on my Mobile phone microscope attachment and using a small hand torch some distance away I manged these three close up along with a scale bar in mm’s. All taken at the same locked in focus distance. That’s me for now and while await the arrival of the Winter Bulleting article. Neil thanks for your post. I had a few niggles particularly after reading John Skinners post of early this year on the same subject and the replies and links to paper therein. I will read the Winter Bulletin paper when it arrives before doing much further research. What I found was the lobes do appear broad and some upturned edges are visible. Funny enough I could not take any clear close ups with my Phone digital microscope even using the lowest back light setting as there was too much reflected light leading me to conclude the lobes were very shiny and not something I have found before.
If anyone would like my specimen sent to them then please let me know as more than happy to have a more expert opinion.
In the meantime I will leave as possibly H.adglutinata or H.lucida and have a review in a few months.

I had discounted that wrongly as I had thought it had peg like insidia but having managed to zoom (bit out of focus though) in a bit further it does look like its soralia instead. Everything else seems to fit now that has been cleared up. Thought I would just close out this post as follows:- I revisited the location of this Usnea esperantiana to see if the red tip growths were still evident. They were and two close ups attached.
It seems I missed checking the Lichen Marins website as the photographs posted there also show the same red tip new growth.

Managed at last to revisit the location and took these photographs of the better developed parts of this Cladonia. The C.Digitata does seem correct. Thanks John – got a bit over excited on this one as often find R.fastigata but typically more compact with visibly much larger apothecia on the perimeter. Neil – Many thanks for your insights into this Cladonia and digitata does seem the most likely. I will be checking further where this was found to see if further samples and better developed ones are present. Chaps many thanks for the clarification and am now in a much better position to recognise this lichen in the future. Mark many thanks and most useful. -
