Interesting. Where does it usually live? Any other distinguishing features?

        Could be Xerula radicata.

You say the spores were light brown. This looks like a Cortinarius, which would have rusty brown spores. Would you mind clarifying your comments?

I don’t disagree, but I have never seen T. ustale so pale and grey. This business is all about understanding the range of possibilities.

Are the colour values in the second photo correct? It looks awfully pale for T. ustale. I’ve never found T. ustaloides, but I’ve been told the demarcation of the pale area is very clear, so I think the former is more likely. But it should be chestnut brown.

How about Hygrophorus hypothejus? Not typical certainly, but if it was stretching to find light…

It’s certainly a Leccinum, but which? I’d want a much closer look really, but perhaps L. aurantiacum. Doesn’t look quite right for L. versipelle to me. (This is bound to get someone with stronger views to comment!).

Thanks. Yes, it is sitting on damp tissue paper in a container now. We shall see.

Sorry. That one got away from me.

At first I thought I had Ceratiomyces, but a second look changed my mind. No idea now. Help please.

Looks like a lot of fuss over a puffball. Not all especially helpful. I’d start with Lycoperdon molle, but take onboard the helpful parts of the advice offered.

Yes. Got it now. Thanks Ken.

Thanks Ken. I was looking at the discoloration in the final photo which I think occurs with H. discoxantha for example.

At the risk of being shot down in flames, those caps look viscid to me. Anyone thought about Hygrophorus?
