Thanks Paul, they are indeed 4-5 micrometers. I can see how leaf spots such as these are confusing taxonomically!

The only clear structures I could see were masses of these small circular particles – spores?

    Hi Chris

Thanks for the link to that key – really helpful! I ran it through the key using the following characters I was able to see on my specimen:
• Oil 3
  •

• KOH+ yellow (not overly strong)
  •

• Aseptate spores
  •

• Spores smaller than 13-18(20) x 3.5-4.2 µm
  •
These led me to Mollisia fusca, which also seems to fit in terms of general appearance.

Thanks Andreas – I think I might leave this at genus level for now – I’ll keep your response in mind however for when I’m identifying Lachnums in the future, when I’m somewhat adept. I’ll keep the specimen though.

Thanks again

Hi Andreas,

Thanks for your response! The tree is an Alder, perhaps that could narrow it down. As for the microscopy, here’s a very poor photo of the spores (I think I need to get my ‘scope fixed and it’s a school night so I couldn’t get the proper camera out to measure them). Maybe the shape at least could help. No worries if you can’t get anything from it, I wouldn’t blame you at all!

Thanks again

Thanks so much Mike, that looks like a good fit. And spectacular photos too!!

Hi Chris

That really does look like a very good match. Thanks a lot!

in reply to: Slime mould on silver birch trunk #41638

Thanks Mike, it certainly does look like a good match. Is the microscopy to confirm this species easy? I don’t have much experience with what’s needed to confirm myxos. It was found today so it’s possible that the specimens I collected may not be completely mature yet.

Wow! It really does have a very distinctive smell, definitely reminds me of curry powder as mentioned in the first link! I’ll record it on the FRDBI, I wasn’t expecting it to be something unusual.

I have another fruit body that I’m fairly sure is a myxo this time – growing on rotting wood. I took a couple of these fruit bodies too if required. Do you have any thoughts on this one?

Thanks a lot

in reply to: Rust on Walnut (Juglans regia) #41218

Thanks Nick, I had gone for rust due to the orange colour and I’d assumed the black spots on the surface were pycnidia, but I’ll chase that lead.

in reply to: Laboulbenia on a carabid beetle #40741

Hi Chris

Thanks a lot for your comment. I wasn’t even sure if it was fungal when I first saw it, so I’m amazed that it’s possible to identify it (tentatively at least)! I’m fairly sure of the identity of the beetle. I’ll definitely keep an eye out for more of this fungus on my beetle specimens.

Best wishes

James

The beetle has been identified as Patrobus atrorufus, a widespread beetle in the tribe Patrobini found in woodlands and wet grasslands.

in reply to: Immature myxomycete for ID #40360

Thanks Mike,

I’ll try to mature any immature slime moulds I find in the future. Very interesting organisms.

in reply to: Fungus on grass stem #40245

Ah I see, I’ll keep a look out on nearby grasses to see if they develop the same fungus. Perhaps I might find one that’s mature!

Thanks a lot, James

That does look like an excellent match, thank you.
