OK. How about P. repanda. The pseudo-stipe looks a possibility, and the spore size seems about right…

Haven’t checked the literature, but looks like P. vesiculosa at a first glance.

Looks like Panaeolus papillionaceus to me rather than an inkcap.

I got the images, but when I clicked on one I got an advert too. Very odd.

In answer to your question, How to look at the spores, try tickling the spore surface with an artist’s paint brush, holding a microscope slide. You may be surprised at the profusion of spores you gather.

Thank you. I do know how to identify fungi. I don’t know how to get spores off something that measures about three millimetres across. I thought I’d done quite well to get it home and photographed under the stereo before it faded away. The gills were pale, and distantly spaced.

                  Inocybe hysterix?

On the subject of early Suillus, I found this pair of S. luteus last week in mid-Wales. Only two, and very dry.

Thanks both. I’m happy with S. luteus. I have only seen it once or twice before, and always with a deep chestnut brown cap, so the dirty streaky yellow fooled me. I’ll know better in future.
