Thanks so much for all the information. As you can imagine, the rain has been incessant here and it was still very very wet in the churchyard and the first thallus I found was on a shady east wall, which probably won’t dry out until spring. But the final photo is of the one on the top of the wall, so that may well dry out sooner. I’ve added another photo here of a very similar lichen found in September in another Sussex churchyard that I was puzzling over. My notes say K+ yellow and possible C yellow, but uncertain and the UV was not pink/red. So not sure what’s going on there. The soriedia are there but not as distinctive a colour in this one. Although it was in partial shade of a Yew, it had been dry for some time and it was a very hot sunny day.
I need to go back and get samples for each of these and do the tests again. This is proving fascinating.
Best wishes,
Sylvia
I’ve now got a sample of the C Calcarea that I could send you to confirm the LF. I don’t have a contact address, but I am the person who posts the events on the BLS website and can be contacted directly on that email, which you might find preferable rather than posting your address on a public forum.
Thank you,
Best wishes,
Sylvia
Will put it in my survey now.

I’ll see what I can do about getting a sample. I’m sure I can find someone to OK it, although its the most neglected church I’ve visited so far in this area. I can probably get one within the next few weeks and it would be great to send a sample as I’m not yet set up for microscopy. I’ll let you know how I get on. Looking at the map, it doesn’t seem to be that common in Sussex, so it would be nice to get a positive ID.
