      Hi,

A Circinaria calcarea I found recently on the wall of East Chiltington Church, East Sussex, has what looks like a lichenicolous fungi. I wondered if this was possibly the LF Lichenostigma elongatum? I have attached photos, which I hope has worked as I’ve never posted on here before.

      Thank you

Hi Sylvia, welcome to the forum – and sorry it has taken so long to respond!

This is probably correct, but I would need to see microscopic features to be sure. These fungi have minute conidial structures which I can’t see on your pictures, and it is possible that you only have vegetative structures (black hyphae without fruit bodies). If it is permissable to remove a small sample, compare with the images here – https://fungi.myspecies.info/all-fungi/lichenostigma” class=”bbcode_url”>https://fungi.myspecies.info/all-fungi/lichenostigma – or you could send me a fragment if you prefer.

        Best wishes

        Paul

          Thank you Paul,

I’ll see what I can do about getting a sample. I’m sure I can find someone to OK it, although its the most neglected church I’ve visited so far in this area. I can probably get one within the next few weeks and it would be great to send a sample as I’m not yet set up for microscopy. I’ll let you know how I get on. Looking at the map, it doesn’t seem to be that common in Sussex, so it would be nice to get a positive ID.

            Hi Paul,

I’ve now got a sample of the C Calcarea that I could send you to confirm the LF. I don’t have a contact address, but I am the person who posts the events on the BLS website and can be contacted directly on that email, which you might find preferable rather than posting your address on a public forum.

            Thank you,

            Best wishes,

            Sylvia
