I found this fungus on 24th April during a woodland/moorland walk at RSPB Loch Gruinart on Islay. It was during a warm dry spell but obviously the moorland is damp/peaty. It was growing in an area of moss but there may also have been twigs hidden beneath the surface. The cap was approximately 3 cm diameter and is “loosely” cup shaped and coloured orange/brown. The rim is distinctly reddish. The stem was equally about 3cms long although much was initially hidden by moss. it is dark brown/black. The cap does not appear to have either gills or pores but the underside is paler than the top. Consequently I wondered if this may be a cup fungus such as Peziza sp. Any help in narrowing down or identifying the species would be very much appreciated.

Late reply, did you get an ID?

Looks like one of the Ciboria species which grow on mummified plant remains.

Thanks Adam. No I didn’t get any earlier suggestions. Ciboria species would be consistent with my thoughts that it was a cup fungus. Thanks for taking the time to reply and thanks obviously for you thoughts on id. Much appreciated.

      Regards,

      Bob
