I would appreciate help identifying this fungus from Dunwich Heath, Suffolk at the end of October. The cap was about 5cms diameter, light chestnut brown and similar colour to the stipe. Gills are off white. The base of the stipe had traces of white down. The site has many Clitocybe species and my immediate impression was that this was one. However, the nearest match I could get was sinopica and since that is Spring fruiting have discounted it. I would welcome others thoughts. Not with that gill attachment. At this time of the year, as the frosts set in, we tend to get the unresolved photographs from earlier in the season for which it is impossible to get more info. It’s fair enough and no reflection on Bob whose enquiries are generally backed up by supporting data. I’d be thinking something like
Lactarius subdulcis, but – as has been said before in instances like this – “dead men tell no tales”. Chris
November 21, 2019 at 5:12 pm #42635Thank you gentlemen for taking the time to reply and apologies for my delay in responding as I seem to have over-looked a notification email. I suspect you are right Chris in that Dunwich Heath has an abundance of lactarius species, but I will treat the specimen like many other of my photographs as “one that got away”. With regards your comment “as the frosts set in, we tend to get the unresolved photographs from earlier in the season”, I suspect I shall be adding several to this particular collection. Regards,
Bob
