the first growing under beech, no particular smell, when cut colour which is pale yellow (camera does not pick this up) remains the same and shows no bruising, the spores are very pale buff

The second I thought was slime mould, but obviously is not, it seems quite bubbly with in places what looks like the start of cap, growing under beech. Hope I have given enough details for ID :)

Ok I think the first one is Red Cracked Boletus – Boletus chrysenteron am I right?

    Still stumped with second though.

Just wondered if this post had been missed?

I suspect you have not had any replies because many of us are unsure about the splitting of the Xerocomus species with any degree of confidence. Being under beech with little or no bluing I think you are right with X chrysenteron although I would normally expect the red to be further up the stem.

As for your second I think it would be impossible for any reasonable suggestion to be made from just that one photo. It does not look like a slime mould it just looks like the remnants of something that is well past its best even if it was fungal.

Thanks Mel, appreciated. I must say I was flummocked by second, particularly as there were a number of patches like this, could only get near enough to get a couple of photos as the rest were dotted up very steep wet slippery slope which runs down from the line of beech trees. I will presume that they were some sort of fungi totally ‘gone over’.
