This fungus was photographed at Dunwich Heath, Suffolk at the end of October. Many Russula species were present including ochroleuca. However, this particular specimen was much darker brown (rather than yellow) than the other ochroleuca and also more uniform in shape. Am I along the right lines or barking up a tree as usual?

Really need a lot more info than this…do I need to link the FAQ again ;)

Host tree would be good. With Russulas, we need taste and smell. Discolouration on bruising. Extent of peeling of cap.

Even after that, microscopy is usually needed.

It looks wrong for R. ochroleuca IMO which is paler.

      regards

I’m sure mentioned elsewhere on the site, “The Genus Russula in Great Britain: with Synoptic Keys to Species” by Geoffrey Kibby is invaluable for identifying Russulas.

Great photos, again, Bob, and I love the little Mycena peeking above the leave litter in the second (another genus that can be challenging to ID).

Thank you both. I take your point completely Adam regarding the host tree. Part of my problem on this occasion was that the fungus was in an area of closely growing mixed woodland – I think there are oak, birch and beech leaves in the photo. Nevertheless I appreciate Russulas are a difficult species (particularly for me) and that more information is required. Thank you Nick also for the book recommendation – I now have one on order.
