I got quite excited keying this all out in Kibby – I was able to answer all the key questions with confidence, only to find that no bolete matched the resultant BGKOST. Found in Hampshire on grass but near mixed woodland with predominantly birch. The cap was reddish brown/chestnut with a felt like pileus. (BG). Pores were yellow (K) and bruised a blue/green (O). The stipe was yellow but near the top had red squamules (S). I would have described the pore attachment as free. When cut, the flesh turned briefly blue (but this was done at home hours after specimen removed) (T). Flesh colour was pale yellow and I noted that the cap flesh was a deeper yellow near the pores. Spores were olive brown and variable in size. Feel a bit frustrated that I should be close to being able to get an identification and wondered on the photographic evidence whether anyone disagrees with inputs or is able to offer me a steer. Appreciate any help. Thanks

        Hi,

Excellent attempt at keying out, but worth noting that Kibby’s “synoptic key codes to British boletes” excludes Suillus, Leccinum, and Xerocomoid species. ;)

I suspect this to be one of the Xerocomoid species, and if keyed out using Kibby’s “Key to Xerocomoid boletes”, might get you to something like Xercomellus subtomentosus.

        Regards,

        Mike.

          Wow. School boy error. Thanks.
