Crossing a bridge, I was at eye level with the buds of a mature Ash tree. I noticed several of the budding tips were coloured red. On closer inspection this was due to a mass of red spheres each with an apical opening just about visible. The fruiting bodies where limited to the buds.

I’ve not seen this before and I know little about Nectria species so would be interested to know more.

    Hi Steve

it might be worth popping this on the http://www.ascofrance.com/” class=”bbcode_url”>http://www.ascofrance.com/ website as a general query. There are several experts on the Nectriaceae on there. This whole area is quite complex and many ‘nectrioid’ species thought to be straightforward are now being found to be species-complexes where identifying the imperfect states, culturing or even sequencing are necessary for an identification. For example we used to happily call Nectria spp. occurring on diatrypaceous fungi either N. episphaeria or N. magnusiana – but it’s not that simple, sadly.

The parasitic, gall-forming Neonectria galligena comes to mind here but the comments above hold true . . . . .

    cheers

    Thanks Chris,

    I might try ascofrance.

I spent some time reading threads on Nectria after seeing this (some on ascofrance) and Neonectria galligena frequently came up.

    Cheers

    Steve
