Before I really get stuck into this one, are there any obvious candidates? August 4, 2015 at 8:34 pm #35588Inocybe hysterix? August 4, 2015 at 8:56 pm #35589I’ve just checked the cheilocystidia. They are unusual and rule out I.hystrix – no sign of metuloids (but what look like internal crystals) Pleurocystidia also present and similar

Key characters include whether there are pleurocystidia as well as cheilocystidia; and the extent of cystidia on the stem – i.e. how far down the stipe do they extend? (this character is easily destroyed by over-handling – try to handle by index finger on cap and thumb at base of stipe). Also is a cortina present in young fruit-bodies?

August 5, 2015 at 6:48 am #35591Try I. stellatospora(syn. lanuginosa var. lanuginosa). August 5, 2015 at 7:28 am #35592Roy bet me to Inocybe lanuginosa, quite common. The cap of I hystrix is much more spikey. August 5, 2015 at 8:00 am #35593Yes, and it’s got smooth spores! August 5, 2015 at 8:07 am #35594Thanks all. Measured the hymenial cystidia as up to 80µm long (up to 75µm according to Stangl 2011 thus ruling out I.ovatocystis. Spores 9-10 x 6-8µm.
Looks like a solid record and new for Pembrokeshire.
Scattered “caulocystidia” with crystals at apex of stipe but according to Stangl, these are not true cystidia.

A more community driven one (not based on profit) is what I’d like to see. Perhaps like Wikipedia but easier to use.
