Hi all, just been up to Galloway , went to see a good spot for Bog Beacon, Mitrula paludosa, at Cairnsmore of Fleet Reserve and there were none in a few sites there.

At home, Saddleworth, I have 3 spots and only one has been productive this year.

Has anyone else come across a possible cyclical occurrence – albeit over a few years – for these?

    Cheers

    Ken

Hi Ken, I know of a spot here where they grew a few years ago but there hasn’t been any since but the site has been disturbed, I am off to Scotland myself end of June and know of one spot there so will check to see if it’s still growing, it is 2 years now since I last saw it. Joan

I made my annual visit to a local Bog Beacon site yesterday, and was pleased to see them in very good numbers.

A few years back, the shallow ditch at the edge of the woodland track where these grow was almost obliterated by forestry machinery during a major tree felling programme.

But year on year, they are steadily increasing back to something like their numbers prior to the disturbance.

This small cluster was actually growing on a piece of Scots Pine branch that had fallen into the ditch.

(The dark green “leaves” behind the Bog Beacons are actually Pine needles, and the small white flowers are Water Crowfoot).

That must be a highlight in your brilliant photography career Mike – very tough in terms of exposure and size – but done superbly – not to mention the composition. :D

      Awesome.

        Cheers Ken.

With my Nikon and Sigma 180mm, I would usually manage to get a shot such as this from a good couple of feet away.

But in this case, I only had the Finepix HS10 with me, and, (as a Finepix user yourself, you will be aware), using super-macro setting at full wide-angle, the front of the lens needed to be almost touching the subjects.

So, as there was one very obvious viewpoint for best composition and lighting, I had to stand in the ditch.

Needless to say, the water went over the top of my boot before I’d got the shot! 😳

At least I did get the shot I wanted – as well as a wet foot. :D

        Regards,

        Mike.

          Thanks for your comments, both.

Photography has been my primary hobby ever since the year dot. – So I always try to get a decent pic.

I sort of “fell into” mycology. Initially, just from a desire to name the fungi I’d photographed.

But then, the mycology bug bites in its own right, and there’s no going back. :) ;)

          Regards,

          Mike.

Know exactly what you mean Mike, I have suffered the same “addiction” except that my knowledge of mycology is still very patchy (or basic to be more precise) …. 😆

          Regards

Great one – I’ve yet to find it my local bogs and marshes!
