Does anyone know why some of the crusts bleed?

I’ve found quite a few refernces to the fact that they *do* bleed, but no explanation

The photo is of Stereum gausapatum (I think)

    Cheers,

    Phil

Not just crusts, some bracket polypores can bleed, and some agarics such as Rhodotus palmatus can exude drops from the gills. The examples that come to mind tend to be decomposers of wood, although Hebeloma crustuliniforme grows on soil and ‘weeps’. In the case of wood decomposers, I believe that the decomposition of the wood by the fungus as it feeds releases moisture, which the fungus releases by ‘guttation’, which is just a fancy term for the formation of drops of moisture.
