I photographed this fungus on Christmas Eve at Draycote Water near Rugby. it was growing along a grass pathway with trees/hedging on either side. The area is sheltered and damp and the fungus appears to be growing on the moss. As can be seen from the photos the fungus is small even in comparison to the moss. Unfortunately the photos are not the sharpest and I haven’t managed to get all angles. I would like to think it is Arrhenia retiruga (Small Moss Oysterling) and hope it is possible to confirm this from the limited views. Many thanks for your consideration and a happy New Year!

    Regards,

    Bob

      Hi Bob,

You may well be correct with Arrhenia retiruga.

Macroscopically it seems to have all the right looks, and it does seem to be growing on the moss.

I don’t think that there are many other species that it could be confused with (maybe A. spathulata – but I understand that one is typically a coastal/sandy-habitat species)

Other than giving the usual “microscopy needed to be completely certain” mantra, from the macro characteristics seen in your photos, I’m tempted to agree with you.

      Regards,

      Mike.

Many thanks Mike. Completely understand the caveats. A species I have not seen previously so a good way to end the year.

      Regards,

      Bob
