I photographed this emerging fungus at Dunwich Heath, Suffolk at the end of October. The area is obviously heath intersperced with mixed woodland. The measurements are probably totally irrelevant since it is so immature. Nevertheless, the stipe was approx. 2 cm diameter and the cap possibly 2.5-3 cms diameter. I cannot comment on the gills/pores as these were not visible and I didn’t cut into the fungus. I appreciate this is very limited information but wondered if it might be an Amanita species. Many muscaria were present and also rubescens and it is the latter that I thought may be possible. Many thanks.

Great photo, Bob, and is that a slightly more mature specimen in the background to the right? At the risk of further embarrassment, might I suggest it’s a boletus, maybe Boletus edulis – but I could be totally wrong : )

I would agree with that Nick.

Thank you both – it’s much appreciated. Always amazed at the different characteristics taken on by a fungus during the course of its fruiting life. Many thanks.
