Thelotrema lueckingii and Arthonia excipienda?

Looking for photographs of something else I came across a couple taken in Glengarriff Woods, SW Ireland in May, 2012.

Could they be Thelotrema lueckingii and Arthonia excipienda (spores 1-septate, 15-17 x 5-6 µm)?

Yes that is Thelotrema lueckingii, but this is a rather doubtful taxa, the variable amount of yellow pigment in Thelotrema lepadinum has been noted since the 19th century and without sequencing it is not clear that it has any taxonomic significance. (NB, the yellow pigment is only visible in the field when the thallus is damaged, so lots of apparent Thelotrema lepadinum might also be the Thelotrema lueckingii morph). Also it is very common, most material deep in the woods in the New Forest has copious amount of yellow pigment (UV+ yellow, which makes small exposed flecks easier to see), so is presumably Thelotrema lueckingii. I would think that Thelotrema lueckingii is very common in Ireland, but worth recording until someone has done more work on it.

The Arthonia excipienda looks fine and looks to be a very good record for Ireland.

Many thanks Neil – the Arthonia excipienda was from the same 10km square as the pre-2000 record shown on the BLS map but from the other side of the village.
