Hi, this is my first post on this website so apologies if I get anything wrong! :?

I would quite like some input/confirmation on this post: http://www.ispotnature.org/node/668125?nav=search which has been identified as being Puccinia magnusiana or Uromyces dactilidis. Do either of them have ‘behavioural’ (I’m not sure what the correct word is for fungi) traits such as the number of fruiting bodies on the leaf?

Hi, and welcome to UK Fungi.

From your photo, I don’t think you have either – but I’m no great expert!

I’d recommend uploading photos directly to this site rather than linking elsewhere – it makes things work much more smoothly. ;)

Uploading here is very simple – just make sure that your photos are less than 400KB filesize, and use the “Attachments” tab that you will see below the reply text box when making a post.

      Hi

I agree with Mike; this isn’t fungal. If it were you would have the leaf plus something, here the tiny pits show the removal of plant material. It’s easily done – I get fooled by something every time I go into the field. Interesting in that this was on bulbous buttercup as I’ve noticed this phenomenon usually on (the admittedly much more widespread) meadow buttercup more than on, say, creeping buttercup. I’ve no idea what might cause it . . . insect damage? tiny drops of water acting as lenses in sunlight?

Trust me, when you find the smut – you’ll know it!

      do keep searching ;)

      cheers

      Chris

Now I can see it a bit better there do appear to be a couple of the spots where there is “leaf plus something” – around the left-middle of the image; these look like little pimples and are vaguely reminiscent of Synchytrium species. But there could be other explanations and it would definitely need microscopy in any case.

      Definitely not a smut or a rust though . . .
