      ..but which one, I suppose it is Puccinia acetosae or Uromyces acetosae but I can’t see any equatorial pores..

        Hi Adam

        to better make out the pores on uredospores a useful trick is to mount in cotton blue in lactophenol, pop a cover slip on and heat the slide until it just starts to bubble (over a lighter or spirit lamp or similar). You will find that this procedure clears the spores somewhat, makes the pores much more obvious – it also tends to stain the spore wall preferentially at the point of attachment so you can see where the “equator” actually is.

        Although there are quite a few records of Uromyces acetosae for Yorkshire, I have only ever found Puccinia acetosae . . . . .

          Funnily enough, I read your Yorkshire Rusts pdf and saw you photographed them in cotton blue, so I tried the same (with only inconclusive staining) but didn’t realise about heating the sample, so will know for next time :)
