I collected this orange perithecial fungus on healthy elder bark in Gloucestershire woodland, (alongside the lichen Bacidina friesiana). I don’t think it is lichenised. Not noticeably reddening in K, asci 8-spored, spores 7-septate, about 40x5microns. Any ideas, please? We wondered if it was insect eggs in the first place!

      Hi,

My best guess would be Nectria pseudopeziza.

Grows generally on dead deciduous wood (but also appears on dead herbaceous stems), and in the UK is predominantly a winter-spring species.

Size of individual perithecia to approx. 0.35mm diameter.

Asci 8-spored, spore size 25-45ยต, spores becoming 2 to 8 septate.

      Regards,

      Mike.

      Thanks Mike

I’ll look at it again. It was definitely on healthy live bark.
