Hi, my name is Adam Pollard and I have set up this forum for fungi enthusiasts and mycologists following the demise of the Wild About Britain (WAB) website.

I am a member of the Pembrokeshire Fungus Recording Network (PFRN) and was an active participant to WAB for about 3 years. I am a relative beginner, having owned a microscope for about 18 months. My “day job” is as computer technician.

I am not doing this for commercial reasons, only because I found a great amount of help from experienced mycologists on the WAB site, and would like to offer something back to the community in the hope we can find a replacement to WAB. I care about the community and do not consider this “my site” and am happy to provide database and site backups to anyone I trust in case I can’t carry on. The software is phpBB, a free, open source platform, which is easily ported to new hosts. Site and database backups are made automatically daily.

I encourage suggestions for the development as this forum as I want it to belong to the community.

      Many thanks, Adam

        Hi Adam,

        Lancashire Lad, (Mike), here.

Received your email earlier and have just registered.

Am trying an initial post at the mo, just to get familiar with things.

I wish you success with this venture, and hope that many of the ex-WAB fungi aficionados will join and participate.

        Regards,

        Mike.

        Hi Adam

Flaxton (Mal) joining what will hopefully be a home for all those restless souls from WAB and Foxbook.

Lets hope this time those with nothing better to do than crash web sites leave us alone.

yes, a big welcome from me too, as Pauline says, lets hope, and well done again Adam.

I might just have to start looking at fungi again instead of insects……….. 🙄

            Cheers

Just trying my first post and wishing all the best to this new site. Hi to all WAB past members, have missed the shared knowledge, expertise and humour that was part of that site.

A big thanks should go to Michael Valentine aka Lancashire Lad, for “keeping the faith” and staying in touch with everyone. :D

Forums have many advantages over Facebook. For one, Facebook owns all content (you sign it away when you tick the agree box) so they can use your photos and text as they like. On this site, I take no such liberties, copyright belongs to the user.

Secondly, there are no categories, such as ascomycetes, microscopy etc,

Thirdly, the lack of threading makes it tricky with lots of scrolling to find posts or topics more than a few days old.

                Hi Adam

                Another refugee from WAB

This is (as you probably know) one of several new forums all trying to “replace” WAB ..

I have joined as I recognise a number of the members

                Good luck

                John

Welcome John :D It was thanks to the efforts and encouragement of Lancashire Lad (Mike Valentine) that we have so many familiar people, as well as some new well known names who weren’t on WAB. We have two admins, me and Mike, so we can both make manual backups as well as the automatic one. This should avoid the fate of WAB happening here. While hacking is always a possibility, restoring from a backup can be done within a few hours. I will also keep the system patched and updated, to lower the risk of known exploits being used.
