      Can anyone offer some help with this, growing on what I think was a fallen conifer. My initial ID was Phaeolus schweinitzii but now I am not sure, very confused by the white edge to the upper surface, could be this is how it looks when fresh but cannot find any images to confirm. Any help gratefully received

        Hi John,

        Looks like this one is flying below the radar!

        I’ve been hoping that someone with more experience of the particular species might respond!

        I’ve looked at the pics a few times and keep coming back to the conclusion that it’s not Phaeolus schweinitzii. – But I can’t suggest what it might be! 😳

        Whether it looks wrong because there is some gravitropism/geotropism going on with the fruitbody I don’t know – but it just doesn’t look like any P. schweinitzii I’ve seen.

        For what it’s worth, I’m thinking that if it was P. schweinitzii that the fresh growth would (?) be a more “vibrant” yellowy-orangey-brown in colour?

        (Certainly the ones I’ve seen have been).

          I am not good at identifying polypores in the field – let alone from a photo. But I would suggest Heterobasidion annosum, though fruitbodies would be leathery hard, not so soft and sappy as those of Phaeolus schweinitzii.

            Certainly a bit of a mystery as does not “look like” any polypore I can find in any of my many reference books, as Peter suggests it could be Heterobasidion annosum but I remain unconvinced …

            Think this may have to remain in my unknown column for now, tried other sources including the British Mycological Society facebook page but no success …
