Might this be Lecanora sinuosa? On twig from storm-toppled oak at Bracorina on Loch Morar, VC97/NM7292. Thallus composed mostly of apothecial initials, densely and tightly compacted in most parts. Reactions as expected: C-, K+ yellow, Pd-, UV-, K/UV(dry)+ yellow. Typical spores. Coarse epithecial granules descending into hymenium.

I’ve never personally seen L. sinuosa, but neither have I ever seen such a densely fertile L. hybocarpa auct. br. If it’s reliably identifiable as the latter, I’d be grateful for any help with the specific features that differentiate it from L. sinuosa (assuming that’s possible considering the apparently close affinities between them).

      Many thanks,

      Anthony

Yes I would call that Lecanora sinuosa, although I expect it is most likely to be a morph of “Lecanora hybocarpa” and other than the abundance of apothecial initials I am not aware of any differences. (So similar to Lecanora chlarotera/Lecanora rugosella and Lecanora argentata/Lecanora subrugosa but these differ in smooth margins/rough margins). This needs gene sequencing to prove, and I might be wrong. If I am right and the European “Lecanora hybocarpa” is not the same as the American material the name Lecanora hybocarpa is typed to then I assume Lecanora sinuosa would be a contender for the valid name for the European taxon.

Many thanks, Neil. Glad to have your confirmation.

Are there any plans afoot to sequence and compare European and American L. hybocarpa?
