      I would appreciate thoughts on sub £100 gps unit that is easy to use and reliable! Very useful when you are out on dune systems looking for fungi!

        I have found a Samsung S4 smartphone with a free app called “GPS Status” to be very accurate.

        There is also an app called “My Tracks” which keeps a nice record of the route taken (and also Orux which has offline maps but a bit more difficult to set up).

          Thanks advice. Have decided to go for Garmin eTrex 20 with 8Gb micro-SD card as more robust and better battery life than smart phones. Price from HandTech at the moment is £110 (not including card).

          As a ‘registered technophobe’ I will probably have difficulty using it to start with!

            Digital cameras often have GPS logging, so if you have one it might be worth it to take it along just to find out the GPS ref.

              I’m late to the party, but I too have a Garmin eTrex, which will work in deep forest, it’s astonishing. I recommend you use rechargeable NiMH batteries, Japanese made Eneloops are the best, although they are also sold under other brand names.

                Hi Leif,

                Just about getting to grips with Garmin eTrex 20. This is new technology for me and very much ‘black magic’ !

                I’ve managed to set it up for GB Grid references and satellite signal strength – enough for me at the moment!

                Foray on Saturday 25th July to check with paper map that it gives correct locations!

                I describe myself as a ‘pre Luddite’ !!!

                  Enough self-deprecation, already! 😡 Everything has a learning curve, and it just takes time and effort. :ugeek:

                  There are people who can strip down a car engine. I could if I spent time learning it and acquired the tools. I can strip down a computer, but wouldn’t expect a car mechanic to do it. ;)

                  In contrast, resizing an image is child’s play ;) compared to reinstalling an operating system or doing a cap section to examine the pileipellis 😮

                    Ah yes, you do have to set it for GB Grid, not obvious really. I also had one of the earlier ones, it was useless in dark woods.

                      Mine doesn’t get good sat signal under wet trees (very often in South Wales) but grid reference seems ok even then.
