        I don’t think this is a Rust but not an expert! Possibly bacterial?? I’ve seen similar ‘rings’ on other plants and never sure what they are.

          I have no idea, I didn’t think it was a rust either. The hyaline 3 and 4 septate spores plus the clumps of brown spores make me think it’s fungal. Hopefully Chris Yeates will know.

            Septoria lychnidis Desm.; see: http://www.librifungorum.org/Image.asp?ItemID=19&ImageFileName=SyllogeFungorum3-517.jpg” class=”bbcode_url”>http://www.librifungorum.org/Image.asp?ItemID=19&ImageFileName=SyllogeFungorum3-517.jpg; conidial measurements are always useful with these sorts of fungi; the clusters of brown cells are either mycelium of the parasite or fragments of walls of the pycnidia.

            Recently transferred following a major reassessment of the form-genus Septoria as Caryophylloseptoria lychnidis (Desm.) Verkley, Quaedvl. & Crous
