I found this ‘Witches Butter’ (Exidia sp) on a fallen Oak branch in Falmouth, Cornwall today (5 March 2021). I don’t have previous experience of this group, is it possible to ID to species from a photo alone? (I presume it is E. glandulosa based on host).

    thanks

If the fungus is sufficiently distinctive, it should be possible to identify it in the field or from an adequate photo – otherwise it’s just a best guess or a suggestion. In this case, I think you are right first time: Exidia glandulosa (syn. E. truncata) on oak, its usual host.

Thank you very much for the confirmation, I’m glad I was on the right track.
