      Hi,

I wondered if this is Endococcus brachysporus? I found the black perithecia in abundance in Porpidia tuberculosa on a tomb top. The spores are brown 1-septate and there are only 8 per ascus. The measurements in water are 7.5-12.5 x 5-6 um. The spores seemed a little long according to what I’ve read for E brachysporus. Could it be another Endococcus sp.?

      Thank you

      Sylvia

Sorry for delay in reply, problems with the website. This looks like brachysporus to me, there are a couple of other options referred to in this paper (http://www.lichenology.info/pdf/L8LR.pdf” class=”bbcode_url”>http://www.lichenology.info/pdf/L8LR.pdf) including an undescribed one that still doesn’t seem to have been validated – maybe the authors had second thoughts. The spore sizes you quote are surprisingly broad – were there only a few at the upper end of the range?

Sorry not to be of more help but the species concepts are rather dubious in Endococcus.

        Best wishes

        Paul

          Thanks, Paul.

The spores were very consistently that size and I had a large pool of material to look at, which did make me wonder if it was another Endococcus. Thanks for the link to the paper. I think sticking just with Endococcus might be best at the moment.

          Best wishes
