Looking for confirmation that this is Cladonia chlorophaea sens. str., and not one of the C. grayi sens. lat. group. If that’s not correct, looking for a steer in the right direction.

Collected recently from moss on mineral soil in small patch of rabbit-grazed acid grassland, VC25 East Suffolk, TM47 Dunwich. Would be first VC record of C. chlorophaea sens. str., though C. chlorophaea sens. lat. is well-recorded in the vice-county, including in the same hectad as this specimen.

Basal squamules erect and incised when fully developed. Podetia tallish, granular-sorediate above, with small, incised squamules below. Brownish in upper parts where soredia have rubbed away, but medulla white where particularly exposed. Small, brown, more-or-less sessile pycnidia on scyphus rim. C-, K-, KC-, PD+ red, UV-.

      Many thanks,

      Anthony

Late reply, this came in when I was on holiday.

This is part of the large number of Cladonia chlorophaea s. lat. specimens, that are effectively unnamable, without TLC and probably sequencing. Does look a bit more Cladonia grayi s. lat. ish but with no helpful reactions, so I can not say.

There are a lot of these and some are probably difficult to identify species. This is material from my holiday, from Airie Hill, Kirkcudbrightshire, on granite slabs, with podetia darker brown surface with verrucose granules, eroded above to show exposing the dark medulla, schizidia inside cup; UV+ white (medulla), C–, KC+ yellow, Pd+ red-orange. A distinctive feature is the lack of sorediate granuals. This is probably Cladonia novochlorophaea, but I can not get a C+ yellow reaction, but did get a KC+ yellow that is mentioned is some sources but not all.

Cladonia novochlorophaea? from Airie Hill, Kirkcudbrightshire

Nice site; refound Cladonia peziziformis (last seen 1893), along with Cladonia strepsilis, Cladonia pulvinata, Cladonia phyllophora and Cladonia zopfii. All first recent records or new to the area, with the latter found about 4km to south of where Crombie found it in 1883 (west of Bennan Hill), but his area is now under spruce.

Many thanks, Neil — that’s very helpful. I’ll check reactions again and post anything I find, but if they continue to come up negative, I’ll record it as C. chlorophaea sens. lat.

Congratulations on the C. peziziformis and other finds!

          Best,

          Anthony
