Came across this on a wind damaged tree branch in a relatively isolated location. The tiny patch of bright green just caught my eye so photographed it then zoomed in for more detail so I could identify if it was a lichen or not. After viewing and consulting a few lichen books I am relatively sure this is likely to be Candelaria concolor. Would you agree with my ID ?.
Neil many thanks, have read through your link and have attached two photographs of the top and underside of a leaf of this lichen. I only at present have one of those small handheld digital microscopes that I use with my mobile phone or computer. The lichen being so tiny occupied me for about a hour before I could successfully separate a tiny part using a fine needle. From this and other attempts It has the occassional white rhizines on a predominately white underside. It also tested K-ve.
Yes Candelaria concolor, as the general appearance of the upper parts suggested. Worth keeping a eye out for C. pacifica, I have not yet seen it and it does appear like it may be uncommon or localised (this might change, it could spread)
