      Can anyone ID this blue mushroom found today in Sussex.

        Not a mushroom (they have pink to chocolate gills and aren’t blue), but probably a species of Cortinarius, judging by the rusty-coloured gills. The slimy cap suggests the subgenus Myxacium. Somewhere near Cortinarius salor, perhaps…but it’s not exactly an easy group to identify.

          This looks like a Stropharia to me.

          There are three similar species I’m aware of with a blue cap.

          One smells of white pepper and is common in grasslands, Stropharia psuedocyanea.

          S. caerulea and S. aeruginosa prefer more fertile habitats.

            I think a spore print is the next step.

            Rusty brown spores= Cortinarius

            Purpleblack spores = Stropharia

            any other colour = something else !!

              Remember you have 5 senses (sight, touch, smell, taste and hearing) NOT only sight. For us, trying to ID your mushroom (definitions of mushroom are quite varied and vague) the more information you can give, the better, especially of the other 4. Smell is tricky to guess from a photo.

              In addition, a habitat shot is usually better. If you cant provide, this, then more detailed notes… what was it growing on? Grass? Soil? wood? Were there trees nearby?

              Please make it easier for us…it would be more useful to know it was growing in an oak forest than “in Sussex”

              The blue you refer to… I assume it was blue when you picked it but then faded? Or did the camera render the colours wrong.
