While on a walk today to do my big butterfly count, I saw two mildews. I was wondering if they could be identified to species?

Hi Jimmy
in answer to your question yes, most powdery mildews can be identified based on host alone. What you have there are:
on hogweed Erysiphe heraclei
on oak Erysiphe alphitoides
The chasmothecia (=cleistothecia) which contain the asci and ascospores appear later in the season, often preferentially on the underside of the leaves. They can be worth looking at under the microscope : http://www.ascofrance.com/search_recolte/3883” class=”bbcode_url”>http://www.ascofrance.com/search_recolte/3883 (click on thumbnail).
