Mark many thanks and most useful. Mark many thanks and most useful. Many thanks for the reply to my post as it fully clarifies the difference when using these two terms. Mark many thanks for your thoughts and that is a much better match. I had to be honest convinced myself Lecanora was not correct. What had thrown me was I had only found tiny patches of F.lightfootii on small branches to date and always with the sunken dark Apothecia. I reviewed my photographs again and found what looks like old tiny small patches with Apothecia. The Apothecia are missing from the left hand one. Other photographs are too indistinct but seem to show other such older locations.
Mark many thanks for your help and in particular for doing the isidia cross section of the two. I am now certain the isidia are solid and the white medulla is thin and whispy. The font of knowledge given in replies to my posts is impressive and make looking at lichens much more interesting. One of my common sayings to new graduates was okay now you have your degree it not the end but the start as you will never stop learning. Substitute Dobsons for the degree and you get my drift. Will now add this to my BLS spreadsheet. Lastly noticed your post on P.orbicularis and had already put one last month into my BLS spreadsheet but also had noted that I could not get a K+ yellow reaction on the medulla.
Neil that’s clarifies thing nicely for that one far better than I had hoped – thank you – but could I just grab your attention one more time – as to your view on the two more attached photographs taken previously in a different location. There are similar on the embedment of the apothecia but they are much shorter. So is this still Graphis scripta. From Dobsons it does look more like G.elegans but close up do not seem to show side furrows. Neil many thanks, have read through your link and have attached two photographs of the top and underside of a leaf of this lichen. I only at present have one of those small handheld digital microscopes that I use with my mobile phone or computer. The lichen being so tiny occupied me for about a hour before I could successfully separate a tiny part using a fine needle. From this and other attempts It has the occassional white rhizines on a predominately white underside. It also tested K-ve. Hopefully this helps.
Mark many thanks for you insight into the identification of this lichenicolous fungus very much appreciated. Simon I agree it can only be sap based on the second visit. P1 did look like fungi but should have looked at the rest of the tree at the time but you live and learn as they say. Revisited P1 location today and took these additional photographs. The main fungi location seems to be about 600mm above P1 on a conifer that is leaning significantly against some others. The yellow crust is hard and not soft. Hope these photos help an ID. Peter many thanks for the response and on review you are correct on P2 & P3. I will revisit P1 location in next few days just to see if anything has changed as I can recall another yellow nodule although just a stubs rather than the trumpet shape of the one I posted. -
