    Thanks Steve, I’ll look harder!

As for Ash Dieback – that’s a good thing!!!

Do you know any examples for this time of year or is that too much to ask? :D

    Ok, thanks a lot Chris!

    Hi Steve,

    Good luck with your survey!

As I said before I was stupid to not take any more photos, the photo of the underside was the most obvious to forget. I didn’t realise that you needed a photo of the side and of the cross section, but I’ll keep that it my mind for next time. I’m quite busy during the week so I might only be able to get out on Saturday to photograph the underside, side and cross section. Hopefully I won’t forget!

    Hi Chris,

I have a handlens on order, but for now I’ll have to make do with what I have. Thanks for your suggestion, the photographs on the website do look similar.

I was certain that this leaf was attached to the stem holding up the flower of this hybrid! Thanks for the info anyway though and I did think it looked like a Stinging Nettle leaf, I probably didn’t look close enough!

My thoughts on Dasineura urticae are that the photo at the bottom of the site you linked show the galls all on the leaf veins, whereas the galls on this leaf are scattered all over.

Can anyone confirm/identify the glue-type fungus, which is the last photo in the series?

I looked all around my small village this afternoon looking for this fungus, I could see none. We have a good number of Hawthorn hedges and a few young plants in my garden but no sign of it at all. But now that I am aware of this fungus I’ll definitely keep a look out!

The pyrenomycete on the twig was indeed growing on Hazel, Chris.

Thanks for your help, although still a bit expensive. What is an oil immersion lens and what will it do?? 8-)

For the moss – I don’t think it’s Sphagnum, probably a mix of Pocketmoss (Fissidens) and Common Smoothcap (Atrichum undulatum).

Thanks Jenny, I don’t mind not having a species ID, especially with my terrible photos! The lichens were in a huge tangle of fallen branches, so it was hard to get closeup. And being winter, the light was bad anyway. (my excuse ;))

Huh, I never knew any of that! Especially the fact that Xanthoria’s and Physcia’s need nitrogen from car exhausts and agricultural fertilisers! Are they then increasing because of us? What did they do before we had invented cars and fertilisers?
