? Coleosporium tussilaginis? Reading my copy of ‘Rust Fungus Red Data List and Census Catalogue for Wales’ – essential bedtime reading!

I think not so uncommon as records on NBN Gateway suggest just that people haven’t looked for it. My guess is that it is widespread particularly around the South Wales coast. Also worth looking for Alexanders and the Rust around old monastery sites – Alexanders was widely grown by monks!

I’ve had a lot of Rust on Common Groundsel – on road sides also Nettle Clustercup on Sting Nettles is in my garden.

I think you might find Bog Beacon at this time of year in wetter areas of heathland – not one I have found myself

Just remembered a couple of others I have seen this year – Parasols looking very dry on sand dunes plus an Agrocybe unknown species at same location. Also Common Inkcap again very dry plus probably a Parasola species unknown on local lawns

I think a very dry April (even in South Wales) has caused problems for fungi in general. I found St.George’s Mushroom in May last year but it hasn’t shown this year. I haven’t found any soil fungi lately. Morrels and allies are usually found in spring but I haven’t found any despite knowing a couple of sites where they have been found in previous years. On trees Chicken of the Woods and Dryad’s Saddle are currently showing. On a Foray tomorrow at Merthyr Mawr Sand Dunes but we are not expecting to find much despite some rain recently.

    Hi John,

I don’t do microscope (and not good with camera!) and had to rely on someone else to check mine!

    Hi,

Great photo! I’m no expert on Myxo’s but this one looks similar to one I’ve found locally a Hemitricia:http://www.ispotnature.org/node/643746

Plenty of Bluebells around me so will keep an eye out for this Rust.

ps how do I add a ‘comment’ to all my posts – probably some where on the website!

Not sure who this is from but sometimes quoted by the ‘Kew Crew’

Very much where I am with Fungi and life in general!

    Hi All,

Many thanks for all your guidance I will have to give this a try but it still seems like black magic to me! Maybe it will become easy for me or not!

Thanks Ken I’ll have a look at ‘Picasa’ at some point. I’m a bit of a technophobe so this is all black magic to me!

Id’d by Mal as Mollisa sp on iSpot – I should have realised it was one of these! Microscope job to get to species.

Photo sizes – this is all black magic to me! It looks like photos from USB microscope are upto 400kb whereas from my camera upto 4MB.

I have no idea how to compress these.

    Hi Mike,

Many thanks information – I’ve printed it for future reference.

My tentative id’ing of Lycogala has been based on spore colour only

    Hi Ken,

Thanks comment , I thought it was an Asco . I can’t do proper microscopy so what other characteristics using USB microscope – x10 x60 or x200 (latter not good) might be helpful for id? Not expecting too much!

    Hi Mike,

Not seen Lycogala and Reticularia lycoperdon together! Finding both locally but separately. Sorry to ask but are you sure on Lycogala species?
