non-lichenised but lichen like
Found a fork forgotten in the garden decades ago and covered in a black 'thallus' with elongated apothecia that follow the grain of the wood. There are some green algal cells mixed with the fungal hyphae in the 'thallus' but I don't think it is a lichen as there is no continuous algal layer. Spores septate tending to sub-muriform, especially the second cell dividing into two. Spores 25x10 mu

Hi Peter
This is a member of the Hysteriaceae, most likely Hysterobrevium smilacis (much more common than the records indicate) but you should compare with species of Gloniella and Gloniopsis as well as Hysterobrevium.
There is a useful key here - doi:10.3114/sim.2009.64.03 - though the first couplet splits on spores larger or smaller than 25 µm - why does this always happen?
Best wishes
Paul
