Pholiota with conspicuous veil tufts
I am trying to identify a Pholiota (or a Pholiota-like / s.l. ) specimen from macro photos. I don't know if these photos alone are enough for a determination and if they might ring a bell to some Lepiota lovers on this forum. They are from Malta, but many Lepiota are distributed widely. It was found it in a maquis under a carob tree (broad leaf). Ph. squarrosa came to mind, but i think it is not that one. Lepiota was excluded because no ring was seen.
Re: Pholiota with conspicuous veil tufts
So, duringbmy research, i came along another species which is more convincing to my posted mushroom: Pholiota squarrosoides
Any experience with thid species?

Hi,
Unfortunately, Pholiota squarrosoides isn't (yet?) recorded in the UK, so in all probability, not one that would be familiar to anyone but professional mycologists here.
From the "pale cap" appearance in your photos, along with information available in books and online, P. squarrosoides does look to be a likely contender, (when compared with Pholiota squarrosa), but several sources suggest that reliable differentiation between the two species can only be obtained via microscopy.
Regards,
Mike.

Common sense is not so common.

It's from Malta.Lancashire Lad wrote: Thu Nov 14, 2024 3:32 pm Hi,

According to FTE, P.squarroides is increasing found towards the east of Europe. It is supposed to smell of bread yeast and is greasier than P. squarrosa. Of course, Malta is on the edge of what we consider temperate zone and is often classed as sub-tropical so you could have African species to consider.
You could rule out Lepiotoid species with a spore print which would be white or greenish.
