Cladonia foliacea

Post by Glos lichens »

Is this OK for Cladonia foliacea? Found in poor dry acidic grassland on Chase End Hill, the southernmost hill on the Malverns Glos/Heref/Worcs border.
What puts me off this as an id are statements such as under-surface yellowish, podetia rare, apothecia very rare. I've used Dobson, LGBI3 and the Nordic Flora. The description on the BLS website fits pretty well, but even there it says that apothecia are very rare, so I was surprised to find that a random sample I picked up just to check should show this feature.

Hi Juliet --

For what it's worth, that looks like C. foliacea to me. I think the little marginal 'tufts' of black cilia or hairs, as well as the laminal, globose pycnidia, might be diagnostic. I recently found a specimen that looks very much similar to yours, and which I also concluded to be C. foliacea: white underside (hence the Dutch name 'Zomersneeuw'); numerous podetia; though no apothecia. For photos and discussion, see https://x.com/specanatura/status/1797978605076828624.

Best regards,

Yes definitely Cladonia foliacea, I have noticed/had pointed out before the odd bit in the descriptions about the pale yellow lower surface, which I have not seen; it always looks bright white to me! In the BLS website https://britishlichensociety.org.uk/res ... a-foliacea I had already edited the original LBGI3 description, from:
lower surface pale yellow with occasional tufts of black, marginal hairs.

To:
lower surface white sometimes with a pale creamy-yellow tinge, with occasional tufts of black, marginal hairs.
Which I think is better, I am assuming that someone has seen a pale yellow tinge on the underside at some point.

Oh yes, also the podetia do occur quite often, if not frequently. I have picture of the podetia up on the BKL website
