I have been looking over some past "mysteries" - I suspect we all have plenty of those - and came across this one. Although I did not see any evidence of a photobiont I was not thinking along those lines at the time.
As I realise this site is visited by several experienced lichenologists I wondered whether someone might have a suggestion:
