Is this a fungus?

Post by Deborah » Fri Nov 13, 2020 7:55 am

This was floating on the vinegar left from a jar of cucumber pickles. I thought it looked quite beautiful so took the picture, but have been wondering how to describe it other than ‘mould’... any ideas/comments much appreciated.

Hi,

I'd agree that it looks like some sort of mould - but wouldn't know where to start with regards to possibility of any sort of species identification.

I would imagine that spores in the air had gained access due to the jar having been opened, were able to grow on the organic nutrients available from the vinegar, and that the vinegar wasn't too acidic to inhibit whatever species of mould it is.

Regards,
Mike.
Common sense is not so common.

Food fungi are quite different to what we're used to. Generally not basidiomycetes, some are ascomycetes, eg Penicillium, others are zygomycetes eg Mucor. You would need to incubate it for another few days and look for spore structures and consult a good handbook.
