Haematococcus pluvialis

Post by Waxcap »

Here's what I found in my bird bath today. There are a couple of rotifers, some green algae and those striking red globes are the resting cysts of Haematococcus pluvialis, a species of Chlorophyta from the family Haematococcaceae - it's what is usually responsible for turning the water in bird baths red.
