Lichenicolous fungus on Aspicilia calcarea

I wondered if anyone might be familiar with this lichenicolous fungus found on Aspicilia calcarea at Portland, Dorset in March 2016? Very small perithecia(?) along edges of areoles and under the microscope there appeared to be superficial strands of black hyphae (10 um wide) present. The spores were...

Re: Abrothallus on Melanohalea exasperata

Thanks Paul - interesting that Abrothallus species are possibly less host-specific than previously thought. I've come across this one on Melanohalea exasperata twice (SW Ire and Dorset) but unable to submit records with only the genus. Hi Chris - the Irish specimen was sent to Paul Diederich but the...

Abrothallus on Melanohalea exasperata

In 2012 I found a lichenicolous fungus on Melanohalea exasperata (SW Ireland). It was identified on the Yahoo lichen group by Paul Diederich as an unknown Abrothallus species and I sent him some specimens. Remembered I found another (very small) example of it on Melanohalea exasperata in Dorset in 2...

Re: Xanthoria

Thanks for another post Chris!

I managed to access the FGBI link for Monodictys fuliginosa but as the hosts are given as Lobaria pulmonaria and Xanthoria parietina is the lichenicolous fungus something else as your specimen is a Caloplaca?

Re: White Crustose Lichen

Did you check the thallus for K, C and KC reactions as if not would be worth doing when you go back - and please keep on posting lichen photos and queries!

Hi Chris - it might be worth considering Herteliana gagei: http://fungi.myspecies.info/all-fungi/herteliana-gagei

Pseudotrichia viburnicola; fungus looking more like lichen

This tiny asco was found in Dorset on a shaded Sambucus branch and with the strong K+ crimson reaction I initially wondered if it might be a lichen. Spores were 7(-9) septate, 55-62 x 9-12 µm However it was identified by Paul Cannon as Pseudotrichia viburnicola. Quote: "It's not lichenized (and most...

Like the update and new header Adam - but (being biased toward lichens) am sad that yesterday's Cladonia background has gone today!

Re: Bacidia squamellosa with Pycnidia

Good to see you here Neil - and I echo Chris Johnson's comment that it would be great if there were more lichen posts!
Really helpful to see the algae images as that's an aspect of lichen identification I struggle with
