Re: Conifer root rot fungus

Welcome to UK Fungi.

I have no idea what it is, but just want to mention that if you want to get rid of the stump, the fungis is your ally. It's likely to be a saprobe, ie one that feeds on dead wood. So it will take care of your stump for you. Don't begrudge it a meal :)

Re: Help with identifying flat topped white fungi please

Spore colour is the numero uno starting point with mushrooms. You can often guess this if you dont want to wait for a spore print. A mature white gilled mushroom won't have black spores, although immature ones often start with pale gills before the spores ripen. Most guide books divide fungi by spor...

Re: Help with identifying flat topped white fungi please

Welcome to UK Fungi :) The key is to know what features to look for rather than general appearance. In this case, I think I can see a volva at the base, Some of the Amanita species are typical for having a volva but grow in association with certain trees. So I think what you have is one of the Volvo...

Re: Help needed with fungus on my apple tree please

If anything, cat litter compost would have less chance of containing plant pathogens. As Peter says, there is nothing you can do about the tree except cross your fingers. Trees can survive diseases like humans can.

On behalf of Charles, thank you both for your thorough replies.

It would be nice if people thanked respondents or even read their replies. Charles has not logged in since he asked the question.

Re: Please help me identify this mushroom

Best advice I would give is to get a guide book (supporting Chris' comment about forlornly scrolling through web images) Then the most important things to check as a beginner are: 1) Spore colour 2) Spore colour 3) Spore colour A spore print is ideal but a guess can often be made from seeing a depos...

Would it be useful to have a lichenologist as an admin?

I think I can do it just for this forum, but it might be handy if you wanted to have sticky posts / FAQs etc or to move posts around.

Re: Can you help me?

Welcome to UK Fungi. :)

You will need to attach a photo to stand any chance of an ID.
Can I also suggest you choose a subject that is less vague. Something like "White mushroom ID please"
