Re: Shetland Lichens. A journey...
Hello Jon, The crustose lichen with the large black apothecia is possibly Tephromela atra or Lecanora gangeloides. There is also a Ramalina, if it has soralia I'd suggest R. subfarinacea, if not try R. siliquosa or R. cuspidata. Lichens on Scottish islands, never look like the pictures from more tem...

Re: Didymocyrtis slaptoniensis (?) on Xanthoria parietina
Thank you Mark, Your response is very informative and helpful. I now have a clearer idea of what to look for. I have looked at some sections and the red pigment is very diffuse and there is no reaction with KOH. It was always going to be very tentaive suggestion without any microscopy. So I will kee...

Didymocyrtis slaptoniensis (?) on Xanthoria parietina
This is the second licenicolous fungi found on the Rowan twig that produced Nesolechia oxypora, collected from the east coast of South Uist last week. The red colouration on the thalli of Xanthoria parietina suggested the presence of Didymocyrtis slaptoniensis. Unfortunately examination of sections ...

Re: Nesolechia oxyspora
Thank you Neil, I should have said that I'd referred to the description on Fungi of Britain and Ireland. This morning I've also managed to find my copy of Hawksworth (1983) A key to the lichen-forming, parasitic, parasymbiotic and saprophytic fungi occurring on lichens in the British Isles; and chec...

Nesolechia oxyspora
Lichenicolous fungus growing on Parmelia sulcata on a rowan ( Sorbus aucuparia ) twig. Collected on north shore of Loch Aineort, east coast of South Uist, Outer Hebrides. The apothecial section shows immature asci, and branched and anastomosed paraphyses with brown apical caps. Spores hyaline with a...

Re: A Lichenicolous Fungus on Cladonia zopfii
No shortgae of C. uncialis or C. arbuscula in the Outer Hebrides. Provided that it eventually stops raining/blowing a gale, I will look for signs of Taeniolella.
I would find a Zoom tutorial on identifying Cladonia very useful.
Thanks

Re: Possibly Solenopsora holophaea ????
Thank you Paul. It's not on the compost yet, and is probably destined for an envelope with the name of Brian Coppins on the outside. I looked at your site and I also looked at Placidium squamulosum, but I think I rejected it because of habitat; the record for VC110 is from Harris and a very sandy si...

Possibly Solenopsora holophaea ????
This lichen was collected from Lingeigh, a small island off the north coast of North Uist, Outer Hebrides (NF8778), on 28 september 2020. I was not present, so I have no detailed knowledge of the habitat, but I suspect it was a peaty crevice. The island is Lewisian gneiss (siliceous) covered with pe...
