Looking for rusts can be very addictive on an old photo I saw what looked like rust, so had a good look today and found this growing on a Southern Marsh Orchid. As usual please let me know if I am wrong.

      Great photo Joan. ;)

On Dactylorhiza praetermissa – Southern Marsh Orchid, the only rust that produces cluster-cups such as in your photo is Puccinia sessilis.

The cluster-cups are the aecidial stage, (stage I), of the rust.

There is another rust: – Melampsora epitea var.epitea, which attacks Southern Marsh Orchid, and at first glance might look similar.

But its stage I aecidia are “caeomoid” which means that they have no well defined shape.

So you can be confident that Puccinia sessilis is what you’ve got.

(The same rust attacks Ramsons too: – http://www.fungi.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=9#p58).

      Regards,

      Mike.
