      Greetings:

      I am new to fungi photography and I have been using a Sony Cybershot in preference to my Nikon D7000 due to weight and ease of carrying it in my pocket everywhere I go.

      I am wondering what small cameras you are using? I read the posts here, but they are all from 2015. What is new for 2020? Or are you still happy with those older cameras?

      I would very much appreciate your advice on this.

      I live in the Chilterns in Oxfordshire.

        Still with my TG4 and has been said not as good as an SLR/DSLR but even with a naff/lazy photographer like me ie no special setup and almost always without tripod I can get some acceptable results.

          Thank you. That is very helpful. You are the second person to recommend the Olympus TG4. I will take a close look at it.

            Hi Linda, welcome to the group.

            I also have the Olympus TG4 which I bought initially for its underwater function, especially for photographing seaweeds in rock-pools. It’s also useful for taking on long treks. Otherwise, I take my Nikon and tripod.

                I would recommend also having a look at https://www.dpreview.com/products/canon/compacts/canon_g9xii” class=”bbcode_url”>https://www.dpreview.com/products/canon/compacts/canon_g9xii (I presume there may well be later versions).

                I love mine and also got it as a carry-everywhere workhorse; it’s extremely light (c200gm) and while I have been a lifetime Nikon DSLR man (4 different bodies!) and have always preferred a proper viewfinder, this Canon has a neat trick (which may be more widespread?) whereby you can put it in a mode in which wherever you touch the screen is where it focusses, so you can focus on something in particular, say off to one side.

                    Do folk still recommend the Olympus TG-6 for on-the-go macro fungi photography? Does anyone here have any experience of how easy the OLympus software is to use?

                      Still using the TG4. The same comment as earlier. Good camera for someone with little or no camera skills and tends to abuse the equipment. I see no reason why the TG6 should be any different

                        The only trouble with these cameras is the lack of a cover for the glass in front of the lens. This means you have to put it in a case after every shot or it gets scratched.

                          People say that modern smartphones are as good as these compact cameras? Anyone have the TGx series and a smartphone with realwold experience?

                            Very late reply, but might be of benefit to others.

                            Smartphones have more or less wiped out the budget compact market, but they still do not compete with high end compacts. The lack of an optical zoom in most cameras is one factor, but also the lens and sensor size is inevitably restricted. Most smartphones are not so good in dark woods, or for real close ups although better ones are.

                              Another point to bear in mind is that TG series cameras are waterproof so ideal for wet, windy, autumn conditions (especially west Wales!). I’m not sure how weather proof most mobile phones are.
