I took these photographs earlier today in Wappenbury Wood near Coventry. This is a mixed woodland and the species were all growing on Silver Birch. They were all within 20 metres of each other and I assume they are the same species. They appear to be an aberrant/unusual form of mazegill, but I would very much welcome others thoughts. Many thanks.

By Mazegill you mean Common Mazegill – Datronia mollis ?

Which they do seem to resemble aside from the one that looks like the tubes are spiny.

Mazegill isn’t a group it’s a characteristic and they’re spread across a number of families.

Many thanks for your response. I was thinking Common Mazegill (Datronia mollis) and it was the spiny nature of the tubes that was causing concern, hence my reference to aberrant/unusual. Thanks for taking the time to respond. Your more knowledgeable views are much appreciated.

    Regards,

    Bob
